Psychology of Success: The Science of Thriving in Adversity
Overview:
What is your biggest Challenge at work? Being asked to do more and achieve more in less time or with fewer resources? A difficult environment dominated by constant organisational change or industry uncertainty? Difficult people? All of the above?!
Here's the thing: no matter your role, your organisation or your industry we know first hand that adversity is inevitable. But how well we deal with adversity is not inevitable. And it can be improved. In fact, it is possible that resilience can become your career competitive advantage.
Social science researchers who study resilience, grit, the acquisition of expertise and the habits of high performers, have uncovered a great many insights as to the difference in psychology between world class performers and the rest of us.
In this session the focus will be on three aspects of improving resilience:
- Preventative measures - how can I be at my best before adversity strikes?
- Reactive measures - when an adverse event does occur, what is the most effective way to react in the moment?
- Therapeutic measures - if I find myself ruminating on an adversity that has already occurred and I just can't seem to shake its effects, how do I rethink and reframe the adversity more effectively?
In this session we will particularly focus on aspects one and two. For aspect three, we will summarise 'best practice' in the scientific literature and then provide you with additional resources to continue that work for yourself after the session.
This session is inspired by the work of world renowned experts like Dr Carol Dweck (Stanford) and her work on mindset, Dr Shawn Achor (Harvard) and his work on the habits of happiness, BJ Fogg (Standford) and his work on 'tiny habits' and Dr Martin Seligman (Penn State) and his work on learned optimism. The session draws these disparate threads together ?to give attendees a holistic understanding of the psychology of high performers and practical tools to take their day to day performance to the next level.
