Sydney | Recruiting for Diversity & Inclusion: Part I

Topic One:  Unconscious Bias & Cultural Sensitivity

Overview:

Diversity is about our individual differences and acknowledging the unique blend of knowledge, skills and perspectives people bring to the workplace.Diversity can include characteristics such as cultural background and ethnicity, age, gender, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, language and education. Diversity also includes characteristics such as professional skills, working style, location, and life experiences.

An inclusive culture is one where everyone feels valued and respected and is able to fully contribute. It is about removing barriers to make sure everyone can fully participate in the workplace and have equal access to opportunities. Inclusion is about empowering people to contribute their skills and perspectives for the benefit of organisational performance and business outcomes.

Why Diversity and Inclusion matters?

Diversity is central to innovation. It brings forth new and better ways of doing things, helps us to harness the benefits of technology and improve the efficiency and quality of our services. Inclusion is the key to unlocking this potential.

Dr Linda Peach has designed three specific modules for recruiters that make up the overall Recruiting for Diversity & Inclusion Program, they are:
  • Topic One:  Unconscious Bias & Cultural Sensitivity
  • Topic Two:  Diversity & Inclusion in the Australian Workplace
  • Topic Three:  Vetting CVs and Interviewing for Diversity

Note:  this registration is for Topic One only

Topic One Learning Outcomes:

This module will cover the automatic reactions we all have to people and situations that are outside our expected norms.
  • Unconscious bias: automatic reactions to candidate (or client) characteristics
  • Mindfulness – i.e., being aware of your automatic reactions and learning how to resist them. Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.
  • Cultural sensitivity: how to work with clients and candidates who come from different cultures
  • Getting past language barriers in recruitment work

Meet the facilitator: Dr Linda Peach

Linda completed her Ph.D in Psychology at the University of Queensland in 2012. Using mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, her thesis focused on the impact of ongoing gender inequality on how young Australians viewed their future roles at work and at home. Linda is a diversity and research consultant and subject matter expert. She has worked in research and diversity roles in universities and the federal government, and works with large corporate organisations as an independent consultant.

Linda conducts workshops and training sessions to help organisations improve diversity and inclusion and is regularly called on as a keynote speaker at functions. Many years ago, Linda worked as a recruitment consultant in Australia and in London, so she has a good understanding of the pressures that recruiters face in today’s marketplace.

She keeps her hand in with academic work at Macquarie University and UTS and is looking forward to working with RCSA in delivering diversity and inclusion training to recruitment consultants.
