Introduction to Managing the Risks of Psycho-Social Hazards

Introduction to Managing the Risks of Psycho-social Hazards (psychological health risks) in Recruitment

Overview:

This 2-hour training course will provide RCSA members with the knowledge to identify and manage psycho-social hazards in recruitment across Australia and New Zealand regions.

A psychosocial hazard is anything in the design or management of work that causes stress. Exposure to psychosocial hazards, such as but not limited to the following can be harmful to the psychological and physical health of workers and compromise their well-being.

  • Remote or isolated work,
  • Concern about exposure to COVID-19,
  • Increased workloads,
  • Decreased opportunity for workplace social connections and interactions,
  • Poor role clarity,
  • Poorly managed change,
  • Work relationship conflict,
  • Exposure to work-related violence, aggression, traumatic events,
  • Low support
  • Fatigue

For many people, the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced and increased a range of psychosocial hazards in the workplace, at a time when a range of other non-work related psychosocial risks are also occurring (uncertainty about future employment, social isolation etc.). For example, the increase of workers working from home since the start of the pandemic* presents a higher psychosocial risk related to remote and isolated work.

Creating work and workplace environments where people feel psychologically safe is just as important as creating a physically safe environment.

The impact of psycho-social hazard exposure can be linked to unplanned absences including sick leave, staff turnover, withdrawal and presenteeism, and reduced productivity. It can be a significant cause of injury or illness which may lead to depression and anxiety in the long term. In fact, one in five Australian employees report that they have taken time off work in the past 12 months work due to feeling mentally unwell. Work-related mental injuries are the second most common cause of workers’ compensation claims in Australia, and people on a claim for work-related mental injuries spend longer out of the workforce than those out of the workforce for physical injury.

Recruitment and staffing firms have a legal obligation under their regional (Australian or New Zealand work health and safety acts to ensure the psychological and physical health and safety of their workers, so far as is reasonably practicable.
