Cultural Competency: Understanding the Tools & Behaviours

Overview:

If you haven’t identified all the ways your workforce differs, how can you support and celebrate them?

Brunel’s Cultural Competency package is not your usual Cultural Awareness course, we believe genuine competency is a life long journey to becoming proficient and remaining relevant in understanding inter and intraculture and using that to create better behaviours, attitudes, systems and services for a truly inclusive workplace and future.

Current research shows unequivocally that companies led by gender equal management teams outperformed in all measured areas – including innovation, adaptability and employee wellbeing – compared to those led by majority female OR male leadership teams. This has been highlighted even more so during the COVID-19 crisis. Creating a sustainable, and meaningful D&I strategy is no small effort but when done well, can reap rewards and be a competitive advantage that many businesses are yet to unlock.

We are in a point in time where inclusion at work is critically important, not only for employees but for companies commitments to society and their future competitiveness. The sooner we prioritise diversity efforts, the sooner we can develop true business resilience and accelerate recovery in the event of future major disruptions. First Nations People continue to experience higher levels of exclusion that their non-Indigenous colleagues, so too do people with disability and people with an LGBTIQ+ identity or status while neurodiverse candidates experience roughly 40% unemployment rates.

Attracting and retaining new business in target market segments can be influenced by perceptions in relation to factors such as ethical conduct, corporate responsibility or citizenship, and commitment to equality and diversity. That is why business leaders should not seek a return to normal post-COVID-19, but rather, establish a new normal in order to build back better.

Cultural Competency (The Tools and Behaviours) is the first session within our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Training suite.
